SUDHA MURTY : 21 BEST BOOKS BY HER
The eminent bilingual writer of Kannada and English books, Sudha Murty is famous for her philanthropic activities and is the chairperson of Infosys Foundation. She was a keen academician since childhood and became the first female engineer to be hired in TELCO, India’s largest automobile manufacturer. With an aim to empower as many women as possible, Murty's indefatigable efforts to spread awareness about rural hygiene, education, cleanliness have been recognized worldwide and appreciated.
Sudha Murty is a prolific writer of numerous books. Her books have been translated into all the major Indian languages and have been sold all over the country. She was the recipient of the R.K. Narayan Award for Literature and the Padma Shri in 2006. She has published several books that espouse her philosophical views on charity, hospitality, normal life and self-realization through fictional and non-fictional narratives. “How I Taught My Grandmother to Read” is one her most celebrated works, with the title story been translated to more than 15 languages.
EARLY LIFE:
On 19 August 1950, Sudha Murthy was born in a Brahmin family in Shiggaon, Karnataka. Her father Dr R.H. Kulkarni who was a surgeon and her mother Vimala Kulkarni supported her in her endeavours right from her childhood and raised young Sudha along with her three siblings. An educated atmosphere in the family instilled in her a passion to do something extraordinary at an early age. Sudha Murthy’s brother Srinivas Kulkarni is a renowned astronomer who received the Dan David Prize in 2017. Her early life experiences and affinity to her grandmother became the foundation for some of her books.
EDUCATION:
Sudha Murthy completed her BE in Electrical Engineering from B.V.B College of Engineering, Hubli, where she won a gold medal for her exceptional academic performance. Later on, she considered the option for higher studies and went to pursue her ME in Computer Science in 1974 from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and later received a gold medal from the then Karnataka chief minister for topping both the final exams.
Sudha Murthy has always been an advocate of women’s rights and a pioneer in the development of education. Once she wrote to Tata Motors, also known as Telco about their men-only policy, and for that she was called to an interview, and later became the first female engineer to be employed in India. Her position at Telco was important in redefining the company’s jobs policies.
Besides supporting her husband Narayana Murthy in establishing Infosys and giving him the initial investment, she has written a humongous volume of literature which includes books for kids as well. Through her books, she has encouraged the young and elderly to inculcate a habit of reading in them. Sudha Murthy’s education and relentless efforts at contributing towards the improvement in society has made her a brand name. Through her Infosys Foundation, she has helped in spreading awareness about education, public hygiene, poverty alleviation, etc.

National Librarian's Day, 12 August 2021
Dr. S. R. Ranganathan was a former University Librarian of Madras University Library and he is the notable alumni of the University of Madras and he joined as University Librarian in the year 1924.
Since his appointment as University Librarian, he worked hard systemized the Library which paved the way for him to establish the basic Scientific Library and Information Science theories and principles ranging from canons to normative principles. Thus, he used this great library as his laboratory and travelled throughout UK and studied in the University College, London to get depth knowledge in the field of Library and Information Science.
After coming from UK, he was heading the Madras University Library and devised a universal fame Colon Classification, Classified Catalogue Code and published a book titled Prolegomena towards Library Information Science which still known as the Bible of the Library Classification and Cataloguing schemes followed in all the libraries.
The Doyen and Messiah of the profession he worked meticulously to uplift the Indian public Library System and made it as open access system for common man and enacted First Tamil Nadu Public Library Act in the year 1948. And this paved the way for other State Governments of India to follow and enact the Library Act in their state.

By recognising his noble works for the profession, he had been honoured with Padmashri Award by the Government of India in the year 1957.
He pinned Five Laws of Library Science during his tenure in the Madras University Library which are the Grammar for the profession of Librarianship. They are globally accepted and followed by all types of the Libraries in our Mother Earth.
Since his appointment in the Madras University Library in 1924 he achieved many feat and laurels to the profession one among them was the establishment of DRTC in Bangalore in the year 1962, and he was associated with this earlier up to his death in the year 1972. Because of his contribution to the profession as Madras University Librarian, the Great Mother University Library achieved the status of role model for all the University Libraries as well as this Library considered as one of the renowned Library by the academic and research community of the globe.

MOTIVATIONAL STORY
I have a friend named Monty Roberts who owns a horse ranch in San Ysidro. He has let me use his house to put on fund-raising events to raise money for youth at risk programs.
The last time I was there he introduced me by saying:
“I want to tell you why I let Jack use my horse. It all goes back to a story about a young man who was the son of an itinerant horse trainer who would go from stable to stable, race track to race track, farm to farm and ranch to ranch, training horses. As a result, the boy’s high school career was continually interrupted. When he was a senior, he was asked to write a paper about what he wanted to be and do when he grew up.”
“That night he wrote a seven-page paper describing his goal of someday owning a horse ranch. He wrote about his dream in great detail and he even drew a diagram of a 200-acre ranch, showing the location of all the buildings, the stables and the track. Then he drew a detailed floor plan for a 4,000-square-foot house that would sit on a 200-acre dream ranch.”
“He put a great deal of his heart into the project and the next day he handed it in to his teacher. Two days later he received his paper back. On the front page was a large red F with a note that read, `See me after class.'”
“The boy with the dream went to see the teacher after class and asked, `Why did I receive an F?'”
“The teacher said, `This is an unrealistic dream for a young boy like you. You have no money. You come from an itinerant family. You have no resources. Owning a horse ranch requires a lot of money. You have to buy the land. You have to pay for the original breeding stock and later you’ll have to pay large stud fees. There’s no way you could ever do it.’ Then the teacher added, `If you will rewrite this paper with a more realistic goal, I will reconsider your grade.'”
“The boy went home and thought about it long and hard. He asked his father what he should do. His father said, `Look, son, you have to make up your own mind on this. However, I think it is a very important decision for you.’ Finally, after sitting with it for a week, the boy turned in the same paper, making no changes at all.
He stated, ‘You can keep the F and I’ll keep my dream.'”
Monty then turned to the assembled group and said, “I tell you this story because you are sitting in my 4,000-square-foot house in the middle of my 200-acre horse ranch. I still have that school paper framed over the fireplace.”
He added, “The best part of the story is that two summers ago that same schoolteacher brought 30 kids to camp out on my ranch for a week. When the teacher was leaving, the teacher said, ‘Look, Monty, I can tell you this now. When I was your teacher, I was something of a dream stealer. During those years I stole a lot of kids’ dreams. Fortunately you had enough gumption not to give up on yours.'”
